Govt committed to timely statute: PM

KATHMANDU, Feb 19: Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal on Friday said the government is committed to writing a constitution as per the aspirations of the people on time.



Addressing a function organized by Democracy Day Main Celebrations Committee at Tundikhel on Friday to mark the 60th National Democracy Day, the prime minister said new constitution is the main desire of the people and national unity among all democratic forces is needed to that end.



He said, “We have examples of working together through dialogues despite big differences in the past. That’s why we need to move ahead as per the wish of the people, resolving the differences by sitting together.”



He said competition and collaboration go side by side in a democracy and that builds the base of tolerant politics.



Saying that the country is passing through transition, he urged all Nepalis to unite to build a new Nepal through national unity and harmony. He urged all not to be part of attempts to provoke one ethnic group against another, one group against other and one language against other, as there are sometimes attempts to create difficult situations.







He said the country is switching to federalism but that did not mean to split and disintegrate the country into pieces.



Saying that Falgun 7 holds an important significance in Nepal’s history the prime minister said Nepal could have made progress as compared with other developed nations had Nepal got the chance to exercise the democratic practices after the establishment of democracy in 2007 BS.



‘The Democracy Day Main Celebrations Committee’ organized a special function at the Army Pavilion on Friday to mark the 60th National Democracy Day. President Dr Ram Baran Yadav attended the function.



Also attending the function were vice president Paramananda Jha, Prime Minister Madhav Nepal, chief justice Anupraj Sharma, CA chairman Subas Chandra Nembang, ministers, CA members, high-level government officials, chiefs and representatives of different diplomatic missions, security chiefs and commoners.



At the function, Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Nepal Scout and Rastriya Sweadal personnel presented parades and students took part in march-past.



Different teams from Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur presented different cultural items.







Also our correspondents from different parts of the country say that the 60th National Democracy Day is being celebrated across the country by organizing different programs.



In Mahendranagar, a morning rally was organized on the initiative of District Administration Office and District Development Committee to mark the day. The rally was also participated by chiefs of different offices and local security chiefs.



The rally converged into a meeting at Bhimdutta Memorial Chowk. Kanchanpur CDO Buddhi Bahadur Khadka and other speakers highlighted the importance of the day.



In Nepalgunj, tributes were paid to all known and unknown martyrs of democratic movement at a program organized by Democracy Day Celebrations Committee. At the program, a Nepal Police team hoisted national flag and played national anthem. A morning rally was also organized.



The rally was participated by chiefs of different offices, political leaders and cadres, students, teachers, social workers, police, journalists, commoners and civil society leaders.



In Bardibas, patients of Jaleshwar Hospital were distributed with fruits by acting chief district officer Basu Koirala, political leaders and social organizations to mark the day.
