KATHMANDU, March 29: On the day of Chaitra Krishna Aunsi, the traditional Ghode Jatra festival is being celebrated in the Kathmandu Valley today.
According to a popular belief, a demon named Gurumapa, who resided in a tree to the east-southeast of Tundikhel, used to eat children from the city. Despite the efforts of local residents to destroy him, his spirit continued to haunt the city, threatening to harm children.

For this reason, every year on Chaitra Krishna Aunsi, people celebrate Ghode Jatra by crushing Gurumapa's spirit with the hooves of a horse. To ensure no harm comes to the children, food is also offered at the base of the same tree on this night.
The Nepalese Army will also showcase equestrian skills, motorcycle stunts, physical exercises, and martial arts at Tundikhel today. On this day, Lalitpur also celebrates Ghode Jatra by racing a black horse.
