Hareram Karki, Ramesh Shivabhakti, Kanchha Man Waiba and Ashik Gotame were arrestedn with 16,000 ampules of the drugs that they brought to Kathmandu using a rented vehicle. Buprenorphine is a semi-synthetic opiod while Diazepam is also known as Valium, a tranquilizing drug.[break]
The unit organizing a press conference on Sunday said Waiba has been involved in smuggling of the two drugs from Raxaul, India for a long time. Twenty-six years old Waiba of Gokule, Kavrepalanchowk was arrested from Koteshwar with 3,000 ampules of Buprenorphine and Diazepam that he had hid under the seat of a microbus (Ba 3 Kha 1106). The unit was closely watching Waiba following a tip-off and he was arrested immediately after he reached Koteshwar Saturday.
Shivabhakti of Tistung, Makwanpur was also arrested with 3,000 ampules of Buprenorphine and Diazepam from Sankhamul on Saturday. A team had been following him after receiving information about his involvement in drugs smuggling. The unit had arrested the other two from Palung with 10,400 ampules of Buprenorphine and Diazepam from Kalanki on June 19.
The unit revealed that 24,800 ampules of Buprenorphine and 17,600 ampules of Diazepam have been recovered in the first six months of 2012. The unit had recovered 39,600 ampules of Diazepam and 27,500 ampules of Buprenorphine in 2011.
Officers at the unit said that Nepali drug users take any drugs available in the market unlike Westerners who stick to what they are addicted to. Buprenorphine and Diazepam are used in Nepal as substitutes for heroin. The two drugs are easily available in India.
