Foot-and-mouth disease claims 40 cattle

GULMI, Jan 10: Foot-and-mouth disease has so far claimed more than three dozen cattle over the past two weeks in Gulmi district.



As many as 40 have livestock perished in 12 VDCs, including Tamghas, Arkhale, Hastichaur and Jaisethok, where the deadly disease is said to be raging and a large number of people are into dairy business. [break]



According to veterinarians, foot-and-mouth disease causes blisters on the toes and mouth of milch animals and soon after which they die.



Around 150 cattle have been vaccinated against the disease by District Livestock Office, said Resunga Conservation Committee, a social organization working to control the cattle disease.



Worried over the situation, the livestock office has been making efforts to fight the menace of the disease.



It is unknown that where the disease was first reported.
