Issuing separate press statements on Tuesday, Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) and Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) on Tuesday demanded that the government recognize the pact signed between major trade unions and employers´ associations on March 24.[break]
The government on Monday published a notice in the Nepal Gazette to formalize new pay package for workers.
The two business associations have also warned that the government´s move to fix minimum salary and wages without consulting the employers would jeopardize harmonious industrial relation in the country.
“The new pay structure enforced by the government from Monday is against the spirit of the March 24 pact,” reads a press statement issued by FNCCI. The apex association of the country´s private sector said unilateral imposition of new remuneration package is unfortunate.
Major trade unions and employers´ had termed the March 24 agreement a historical pact to resolve the long running labor dispute in the industrial sector. Among others, the pact incorporated social security provisions and commitment from employers and trade unions to establish industrial peace for four years.
Expressing its dissent on the new pay package, CNI said imposition of new pay package would further deteriorate industrial sector that is already plagued by different adversaries.
“The government has unilaterally enforced the remuneration package, ignoring formal agreement that employer associations and trade unions signed a couple of months ago,” CNI said in the statement.
