KATHMANDU, March 29: The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has expressed serious concern over the vandalism of media houses during the alleged pro-monarchy movement.
In a press release issued on Friday evening, FNJ’s General Secretary Ram Prasad Dahal stated that protesters killed a journalist while he was gathering news, set fire to several media houses, threw stones after failing to break into buildings, damaged vehicles, and terrorized journalists.
Journalist Suresh Rajak of Avenues TV died while covering a fire at a building. Similarly, protesters vandalized and set fire to the Annapurna Media Group's office in Tinkune. When security guards stopped protesters from entering Kantipur Television's building, they threw stones, creating panic in the newsroom. The Federation also received reports of the destruction of Himalaya Television's vehicle.
FNJ demands legal action against people threatening journalist...

The FNJ strongly condemned these attacks, which threaten the lives of journalists and media institutions that inform the public and help shape opinions.
“The federation always respects the constitutional right to peaceful protests. However, the federation cannot accept acts that endanger journalists’ lives and terrorize the press under the guise of protest,” the statement reads. “The federation demands that the government immediately hold those involved in these actions legally accountable.”
The FNJ has called for compensation for the affected media outlets and urged the government to take serious measures to ensure the safety of media houses and journalists. The Federation also drew attention to any actions against democracy and the press, warning that it will take action if such acts are repeated.
The FNJ also expressed grief at the tragic death of journalist Rajak in the fire and demanded a thorough investigation into this inhumane incident and legal action against the guilty. The federation offered heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and paid tribute to the deceased journalist.
Various media organizations, including the Nepal Press Union, Press Chautari Nepal, Press Center Nepal, and Socialist Press Organization, have condemned Friday's incident and called for action against the perpetrators. They have urged all concerned parties to respect the freedom of the press, allow unhindered news collection, and ensure the safety of media houses and journalists.
