KATHMANDU, June 3: The seventh elections for the European Parliament are scheduled to be held between June 4 and 7. EU parliament is the largest democratic chamber of the world having 785 members representing the 27 European Union (EU) member states, a press release issued by the EU in Nepal said.

The majority of member states (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden) will hold the elections on June 7. The Latvians, Cypriots, Maltese and Slovakians will go for the vote on June 6. The UK and Netherlands will vote on June 4. Ireland will vote on June 5. In certain states, the voting period will be spread over two days: 5 and 6 June in the Czech Republic, and June 6 and 7 in Italy.

Every elected parliament has a term of five years. More than 375 million EU citizens are eligible to vote in these elections. There are currently seven political groups in the European parliament but none of them command a majority.

The Parliament along with the European Commission and the Council of Ministers (the three bodies that make the EU) has separate roles to draft legislations seeking to best protect the interests of the electorate in the respective member states.
