KATHMANDU, Sept 26: Nepal’s permanent representative to the UN Dr Dinesh Bhattarai has been selected as one of the three members of the advisory body to the Trade and development Board of the UN Conference on Trade and Development.

Bhattarai was selected to the post during a UNCTAD meet in Geneva recently. A press release issued by Nepal’s permanent mission to UN in Geneva called it a recognition of the role Nepal has played and contribution it has made to multilateralism.

The release said Bhattarai’s selection in the body would provide Nepal a greater access to male professional contributions to the functioning of UNCTAD in general and to the board in particular.

UNCTAD is inter-governmental apex body of the UN to deal with global trade and development issues. The Trade and Development Board is one of the four major components of UNCTAD.

Other members selected in the board are Yahya S Al-Wahaibi of Oman and Zamir Akram of Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Nepal has also been selected as the focal point of WTO LDCs Group for Aid for Trade. The group is one of several officially recognized groups within the WTO.

The group has selected 12 focal points and 12 deputy focal points. The focal points are given specific roles to follow meetings and negotiations, understand the provisions and collect all relevant information including current state of play of negotiations relating to their respective areas and present to the meetings so as to make the group well informed.
