DPM undergoes surgery in Japan

KATHMANDU, Jan 19: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Narayankaji Shrestha on Thursday successfully underwent cervical decompression with laminectomy surgery at Hokkaido University Graduate School of Medicine, Japan.



"The immediate post operative period was uneventful, he is conscious and post operative care is being carried out in his cabin," reads a statement issued by Professor Kuniyoshi Abumi MD. [break]



A team of Professor Abumi and his team of spinal surgeons were involved in the operation. The surgery started at 9 am and was completed at 12:15 pm.



DPM Shrestha was suffering from cervical myetopathy caused by cervical canal stenosis and instability at a level of C3/C4. Shrestha left for Japan on Monday for two weeks on the advice of Nepali doctors involved in his treatment.



Doctors involved in the operation have said that the functional recovery may take about two weeks from the day of the surgery.
