KATHMANDU, June 7: Tarai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) Joint General-Secretary Jeetendra Sonal said the disputes regarding federalism could be resolved by dividing the five disputed districts into north and south of the east-west highway.

The major political parties and the Tarai Madhes based parties are at loggerheads regarding delineation of Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Kailali and Kanchanpur districts.

"When we are talking about federalism, we cannot argue in favor of retaining any current administrative unit," said Sonal. "We can allow areas of Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Kailali and Kanchanpur to the north of the east-west highway to be included in a hilly federal state and the southern part in a Madhes province," he added. He also said that his party has no problem with the understanding between major political parties to adopt mixed electoral system and to elect 60 percent representatives under the First-past-the-post and 40 percent under proportional representation for seats in the Lower House of parliament.
