Deadline set for escaped prisoners to return by October 6

KATHMANDU, Sept 27: The Department of Prison Management (DoPM) has called on escaped inmates to return to prison by October 6, warning of legal action against those who fail to comply.



In a notice issued on Friday, the DoPM urged all fugitives to surrender within the deadline, stating that violators will face action under the Prison Act, 2022, and other relevant laws.

To facilitate the search and rearrest of the escapees, the department has formed district-level task forces coordinated by assistant chief district officers and comprising representatives from security and other agencies. A special “Fugitive Inmate Search and Arrest Task Force” has already been mobilised.


Around 15,000 Prisoners escaped from 28 prisons and nine juvenile reform centres across the country during the Gen Z protests on September 9. While more than half have since returned, thousands remain at large. Police have already begun arresting those who have not surrendered voluntarily.
