KATHMANDU, Sept 1: Apart from the mainstream bands, the number of rock and metal bands who have been performing covers and their originals at gigs and bars is growing.

The underground music has found its niche among the rock and metal buffs, and it has penetrated the circles of youth who love to attend exclusive gigs.[break]

A metal band from Patan, Dead Mariners, is among one of them which is releasing its first album “Night of Fallen Morbid” on September 1 at Blues Bar, Pokhara.

“As a band releasing an album is a first priority and one of the most important things,” said Sunil Maharjan, guitarist of the band.

“We are different from mainstream bands as we aren’t professionally involved in music and we’re involved in music because of our passion,” Sunil shared.

He added that the album is not released for a commercial purpose and he thinks that the album will be a good publicity for the band.

Rock Fever, a monthly rock magazine, is organizing a series of gigs in different cities in Nepal to promote the album.

“There are seven songs in the album and there’s a lot of variation in the tracks,” said Savin Chitrakar, the group’s bassist. There are spiritual, tragic, reality-based and phobia-related songs,” he added.

Sunil informed that one of the songs is a white metal song called “Ishwori,” which is derived from a Newari bhajan. “It’s a fusion of classical music and metal and we’re the first band to come up with such a song”

They have also used a Newari instrument called khen in the song. It has also been premiered on Kantipur FM on August 30.

“The heavy metal scene is developing as our concerts have been attracting 500-1,000 fans,” said Sunil. He added that their fan following is growing through Facebook and Twitter.

“It’s been about eight years we’re involved in music and I’ve experienced an increase in the number of fans,” said Savin. “We expect that during the tour, people will like our songs. Our songs are melodious and unique, that’s why our songs are suitable for all music lovers.”

The band believes that after the release of the album, their fan following will increase.
