KATHMANDU, April 28: The National Coalition for Children as Zones of Peace (CZOP) has strongly condemned the indefinite strike called in opposition to a fee hike by private schools and said it has directly affected about 1.5 million children studying at those schools.

"Vandalizing of school buses and other property of private schools has created an environment of fear among children and parents," states a press release issued by CZOP Chairperson Ram Sharan Sedhai.

CZOP said the strike and violent activities constrain the children´s right to education. "It has not only violated the children´s fundamental right to education and the right to study in a safe environment but also dishonored the values of ´Schools as Zones of Peace´," says the statement, adding, " Therefore, we strongly urge the government to end this stalemate immediately by holding dialogues among the concerned parties and stakeholders."

The organization said such activities are against the right to education guaranteed by the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), 1989 and the Interim Constitution of Nepal, 2007.

"Attaining education in a peaceful and child-friendly environment is a fundamental right of children. Therefore, CZOP would like to request all stakeholders to respect and protect children´s right to education and show sensitivity towards the intellectual development of children" the statements further says.
