KATHMANDU, May 8: The Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) has simplified the admission process for the academic session 2026/27, allowing technical institutes across the country to open admissions as early as the day after the Secondary Education Examination (SEE) results are published.

The move comes after CTEVT introduced the “Guidelines for Entrance, Admission and Registration Procedures 2026,” aimed at ending the lengthy and complicated enrollment system that had discouraged students from pursuing technical education.

Previously, admissions to technical programs would open weeks after SEE results, by which time many students had already enrolled in other courses or left for foreign employment or higher studies.

CTEVT Vice-Chair Mohammad Safiullah said the new guidelines have empowered individual institutes to independently conduct admission and registration procedures.

“Under the new system, the council and provincial offices will no longer handle entrance exams, student selection, admissions or recommendations,” Safiullah said. “Institutes can now publish admission notices immediately after SEE results and enroll students based on GPA criteria.”

According to him, all admission procedures must be completed by mid-July.

Safiullah said the revised policy is part of the government’s broader effort to promote skill-based technical education and produce a workforce aligned with the country’s needs.

He added that students from any stream or subject studied in Grades 9 and 10 at community schools will now be eligible to apply for all technical programs under CTEVT.

Currently, CTEVT operates 67 constituent schools, 860 community schools under the Technical Education in Community Schools (TECS) program, and 450 affiliated institutes across Nepal, totaling 1,377 institutions.

Although these institutions offer around 75,000 seats annually in health and technical education programs, only about half are typically filled due to the previously cumbersome admission process.

Nirmal Sapkota, general secretary of the Health and Technology Science Forum, said admission task forces led by heads of institutions have been formed to oversee student selection and scholarship distribution based on set criteria, ensuring easier access to technical education.

Under the new guidelines, students seeking admission to diploma-level health programs must secure a minimum GPA of 2.0, equivalent to a ‘C’ grade in SEE. For other diploma-level technical programs, the minimum GPA requirement has been set at 1.6.
