Addressing the closing ceremony of national conference of divisional headquarters chiefs and senior brigadier generals at army headquarters on Monday, Katawal said Nepal Army personnel from generals to followers should cooperate with the country’s democratization process despite repeated adverse situations. He was referring indirectly to Defense Ministry’s refusal to extend service of eight generals and the recruitment row.

“We should perform our duties entrusted upon us by the constitution without any condition,” the army chief was reported to have told the generals. He said the peace and democratization process of the country has arrived at this state because of patience, restraint and flexibility of the army.

Altogether 31 generals from all six divisional headquarters, and central departments and directorates of the army discussed their internal problems as well as the challenges they face.

Some divisional headquarters chiefs at the conference said Nepal is going to face serious law and order problems if the government fails to tackle the situation on time.

“Especially the small weapons transferred to the hands of small and unorganized groups are going to pose serious threat to national security in the near future,” a participant quoted a divisional headquarters chief as telling the conference. A divisional HQ chief reportedly told the conference that if the members of former armed groups are allowed to reorganize will be threat in the eastern hills, western hills and the central Tarai.

Most of the generals said army integration should be carried out as per the Comprehensive Peace Accord, seven-point agreement reached among the major parties, and the interim constitution.
