Speaking at an interaction program organized by the TRC in Jajarkot to collect suggestions from the war victims, journalists and civil society, Chairman Gurung said they will provide justice to the victims and punish the culprits of the conflict era since Nepal is a signatory nation to the international human rights conventions. He further urged everyone to remain confident about the recommendations of the TRC being implemented, asserting that none of the culprits can run away anywhere in the world.
More than 300 participants in the interaction program were really concerned whether those accused of violating human rights and serious crimes would be punished and victims would get justice. During the program, the victims even complained that many fake victims have taken relief packages meant for the genuine victims.
Bir Bahadur Badi of Bheri Malika municipality-1 expressed sadness that many real victims have been excluded from getting the benefit from the government's relief package and the culprits are not being punished. He urged the TRC to think seriously about providing justice as such violations were done at the behest of political parties and government officials.
"Even there are complaints about fake victims taking relief packages of the government, the related stakeholders have remained quiet," he expressed grievances. Chairman Gurung reassured to look into the issue and bring out the facts.
A member of the TRC, Machala Jha, informed that the TRC has formed a separate commission to provide justice to the women who were raped during the decade-long civil war from 1996 to 2006. "The TRC will provide justice to such women and make effective and just recommendation at any cost," said Jha.
The TRC, which was formed last year, has completed field study in 23 districts by organizing interaction programs with victims. The TRC has a mandate of two years. According to data of the local peace committee, almost 400 people were killed, 11 were disappeared and around 3,000 were injured from both the state and the then rebels, Maoists.
