Conference on cyber security kicks off

KATHMANDU, Feb 1: A two-day conference on 'Cyber Security: Challenges and Solutions for Developing Economies' organized by Computer Association of Nepal (CAN) Federation kicked off in Kathmandu on Monday.

CAN Federation is organizing the conference on the sidelines of CAN Info-Tech 2016 to discuss and interact with stakeholders for making necessary strategies for the development, promotion and expansion of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) sector.Inaugurating the conference, Minister for Information and Communications, Sher Dhan Rai, said that the theme of the conference is very relevant as malpractices are growing with the proliferation of ICT. "Cyber security is an emerging problem across the globe and Nepal is not an exception to it. We need to coordinate with concerned stakeholders on this issue. Organizations like CAN Federation can help in tackling the challenges of cyber security," added Rai.

Saying that Nepal has introduced Broadband Policy and ICT Policy for the development of ICT in Nepal, Rai said these policies also address the issue of cyber security. He also expressed commitments to link information technology in ever sector for economic prosperity.

Around 120 participants are participating in the conference. Experts are presenting papers on 'Critical Infrastructure and Production', 'Combating Cyber Security Incidents in Nepal' and 'Cyber Security Incidents in South Asia and Developing Regional Collaboration'. Richard Lamb of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) was the keynote speaker on Monday.

Sudhir Parajuli, president of Subisu Cablenet -- the title sponsor of the conference -- said that all related bodies should work together in order to ensure cyber security.

Participants and experts from countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and India, discussed on the problems and challenges of cyber security and solutions to deal with it.

Binod Dhakal, president of CAN Federation, said that the workshop on cyber security will help in formulating strategy on cyber security in Nepal.

Different experts are scheduled to present their papers on 'Security of e-enabled Services and Applications' and 'Surveillance and Privacy' on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a total of 241,601 people have visited CAN Info-Tech till Monday. The event, which provides a platform for companies to showcase latest innovations in the field of ICT and to make people aware about it, is concluding on Wednesday.

There are a total of 175 stalls -- 49 stalls in the main hall, three branding pavilions, 104 stalls in the truss, 14 stalls in open area, and five food stalls.

Dealers of computer hardware and software products, computer maintenance firms, power solution providers, mobile and accessories dealers, computer distributors, Internet service providers, telecommunication operators, ICT colleges and training institutes, software solution and payment solution providers, and bank and financial institutions, among others, are participating in the expo.
