The CC meeting held in Singha Durbar, convened to endorse agreements earlier forged by the dispute resolution committee, however, did not enter the agenda as the leaders spent the whole of the session on airing their views and concerns over the delay on the peace and statute drafting fronts.[break]
Speaking to the media after the meeting, CPN (ML) leader CP Mainali said most of the leaders had a similar opinion that the issues, still needing to be resolved, should not be to taken to the Constituent Assembly for settlement through voting.
According to Mainali, the leaders were unanimous on forging broader understanding at the political level to resolve the issues, the endorsement of which has now remained long overdue at CC.
Asked if the current stalemate was a pre-meditated act to deny the country a new constitution, UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal utterly rubbished the speculation and said as the constitution writing process was drawing to its close, there were some intensive final discussions going on about it.
Oppn leaders hold firm to land transactions withdrawal demand
On the sidelines of Sunday´s CC meeting, PM Baburam Bhattarai held informal talks with the top leaders of three major political parties and tried to convince them to do away with the recent protest against the government decision to legalize the land transactions carried out by Maoists´ ´people´s government during the armed conflict.
According to NC leader Ram Chandra Paudel, PM Bhattarai tried to assure the leaders that the government would keep the implementation of the decision on hold. The leaders, however, refused to buy his assurance and, instead, pressed for scrapping of the government decision, which earlier on was also stayed by the Supreme Court.
At the talks, the opposition leaders also made their intent clear that they would continue with their protest in a parliament meeting scheduled for 1 pm today. Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, senior CPN-UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal and NC leader Paudel were among those present in the talks.
