KATHMANDU, Jan 16: The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has on Monday stopped the selection process of the executive director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) amid complaints that the selection process did not follow due procedures.

"We have stopped the selection process as we found it not in accordance with Public Enterprises (PEs) Management Board (Formation and Operations) Order, 2068 which requires that selection of executive heads of PEs be done through competition," said CIAA Spokesperson Ishwari Paudel.[break]

"We received complaints saying that a retired man was being picked for the job, breaching the government procedures," Paudel explained.

A three-man selection committee under Bishwaraj Regmi had submitted its recommendation to the Energy Ministry and the name was expected to be endorsed by the cabinet meeting that could not be held Monday.

There are speculations that the selection committee has recommended the names of former Managing Director of NEA Uttar Kumar Shrestha and Rameshwar Yadav, who retired around 10 days ago from the position of Managing Director of NEA.

The post has been vacant since the resignation of Deependra Nath Sharma, its first executive director selected through open competition, in mid-November.

The anti-graft body had also nullified the transfers of over 70 staffers, including some senior officers, made by Yadav as the officiating head of NEA a few weeks ago.
