Chinese VP assures of support for Nepal's reconstruction plan

SHENZHEN, China, June 12: China has said that Beijing is ready to provide financial support for the reconstruction plan that Nepal is set to lay out at the donors' conference to be held in Kathmandu next month.

Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao, in a meeting with Nepal's Minister for Commerce Sunil Bahadur Thapa on Friday, assured of providing support as per the "necessity and demand of Nepal."

Li has promised that China would send a high-level delegation to take part in the donors' conference.Minister Thapa, who reached Kunming on Thursday leading a Nepali delegation for the Third China-South Asia Expo, called on Chinese Vice President Li, also a politburo member of the Chinese Communist Party, on Friday.

"China is ready to support in the reconstruction as per the necessity of Nepal. China will provide additional support to bring back roads and dry-port built with Chinese support in operation. China will decide on the financial support after receiving proposals from Nepal," Minister Thapa quoted the Chinese vice president as saying.

Appreciating China's support in the rescue and relief efforts after the devastating earthquake, Minister Thapa told the Chinese vice president that Nepal was looking forward to Chinese assistance in long-term projects. In a positive nod to Thapa's request for assistance, Vice President Li told him that his visit to China would be fruitful.

According to Nepal's envoy to China, Mahesh Maskey, the meeting was focused on the issues of reconstruction and reviving Nepal-China business after the devastating earthquake. During the meeting, Chinese Vice President Li recalled his visit to Nepal in the past and assured of support in promotion tourism in Nepal. "Following the directives from the central Chinese authorities, provinces like Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet are more willing to support Nepal," Maskey quoted Li as saying.

Speaking at the China-South Asia Business Forum on Friday during the expo, Minister Thapa vowed that Nepal would achieve the goals of economic development soon with the support of neighbors despite the damages caused by the earthquake. Thapa opined that the Kunming Expo became an opportunity to receive support for reconstruction and promote tourism in China.

Chinese Vice President Li inaugurated the expo organized by Chinese Commerce Ministry and Yunnan Provincial Government.

China has been developing Yunnan as a strategic place for strengthening business and political relations with South and South East Asian countries.

Eight South Asian countries including Nepal and 10 South East Asian countries are participating in the five-day expo. Nepal has 96 stalls at the expo.
