KATHMANDU, July 22: CPN-UML lawmaker Krishna Prasad Dahal has said that the Nepali British Gurkha soldiers in Britain should be granted Nepali citizenship.

During the debate on the Nepal Citizenship (First Amendment) Bill 2079 in the House of Representatives on Friday, MP Dahal said that the Nepali Gurkha soldiers in the UK should be given the chance to obtain the citizenship of both Nepal and the UK.

He said that a provision should be made to grant citizenship to the husbands of Nepali women who have lived in Nepal for 15 years after marrying a Nepali woman. While asking for the amendment, he said, "According to the treaty between Nepal and Britain, the above-mentioned clauses will not be applicable in the case of Gorkha forces." They will be able to get the citizenship of both countries.

If the husbands of Nepali women married to foreign nationals and residing in Nepal declare that they have been married to a Nepali woman for more than 15 years and have renounced the citizenship of the respective country, there will be no hindrance in granting them naturalized citizenship.
