British Gurkha Cup postponed till Wednesday

KATHMANDU, Dec 18: The British Gurkha Cup 2009 that was scheduled to begin on Saturday has been postponed till Wednesday. According to the new schedule, the league cum knockout football tournament with the highest cash prize of one million rupees, will be held from December 23 to January 13. [break]



The tournament was postponed after the clubs requested some more time for preparations and also due to the strike called by the Maoists on December 20, 21 and 22, said the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA)´s CEO Indra Man Tuladhar at a press conference on Friday.



Altogether sixteen teams, including 11 A-division clubs of Kathmandu, three regional teams, ANFA´s U-16 team and PLA Sports Club, will participate in the event organized by the ANFA and sponsored by the British Gurkha Group. The top two teams from four groups after competing in the league round will advance into the quarter final round. The matches will be held in knockout format from quarterfinals.



The opening match will be held between Samsung Jawlakhel Youth Club and NIB Friends´ Club on Wednesday at 13:30. One match each will be held in the first two days while two matches will be held after that until the quarterfinals from January 6 to 9. The semifinals will be held on January 10 and 11 while the final is scheduled for January 13.



Chairman of the British Gurkha Group said that the tournament could be a means of taking Nepali football towards professionalism. “Private sectors should join hands for the development of football,” he stressed.
