Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), which decided to enforce the new rule in the industrial sector with immediate effect, announced that it was compelled to enforce such provision on its own as the government and political parties had turned a deaf ear to its request to stop organizing bandas and general strikes.
The announcement from the FNCCI has come in the wake of three-day general strike called by the UCPN Maoist from Sunday.
Informing the press about the federation´s latest move, FNCCI president Kush Kumar Joshi said that the federation will circulate the decision to all district chambers immediately for its enforcement.
Joshi announced that the federation has also decided to shut down all industries operating in the country during the banda period, as the government has repeatedly failed to ensure security during such closures.
“And every time such closures take place we will not pay the workers,” said Joshi, adding that the No Work, No Pay provision was necessary to end the culture of obstructing industrial operations by the workers.
FNCCI president further said that the federation has already informed its decision to the workers, political parties and other concerned agencies. Other business associations too have agreed to enforce the provision among their members as well, he added.
Referring to the looming economic crisis that has been tipped off by the sharp rise in balance of payment (BoP) deficit, FNCCI has cautioned the government that until and unless the government improved the industrial and investment climate, it will not be able to avert the damages.
The apex business body has also pin-pointed political instability, growing industrial insecurity and labor agitation, rising culture of large political parties using labor unions to fulfill their interests, extortion drive and increasing threats to entrepreneurs/investors as major factors behind gloomy performance of Nepal´s industrial sector.
“It is no wonder that we are suffering huge trade and BoP deficit,” said Joshi, urging the government to correct the situation immediately.
Referring to media reports of capital flight in the present industrial and economic gloom, Joshi said that protecting domestic investments has become a major challenge of the present day government.
“Increasing incidents of bandas and strikes is only worsening the situation. All political parties must realize this and work toward correcting this culture of destruction,” he said urging the parties to stop organizing general strike and bandas.
