Birgunj remains tense throughout day today

BIRGUNJ, Dec 19: Tense situation prevailed in Birgunj throughout the day today due to the clashes between the demonstrators and the police.

Police and the cadres of the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF), who are waging a protest against the constitution, clashed from time to time at local Ghantaghar and Maisthan Chowk since the afternoon today.


The protesters have pelted rocks and petrol bomb at the police and the police fired a shell of teargas to take the situation under control, according to the Chief District Officer of Parsa, Keshav Raj Ghimire.

Three policemen were injured and one of them was hit in the head due to the brickbats thrown by the demonstrators, Police Superintendent of Parsa, Rajubabu Shrestha said.

Earlier, police had taken seven protesters under control after the protesters started obstructing the movement of people and vehicles and vandalising motorcycles. A UDMF local leader accused the police of breaking the head of one of those detained cadres.

The demonstrators vandalised a motorcycle near local Panityanki accusing the motorcyclist of breaching the shut-down. It is said the camera of a local journalist was broken by stones the demonstrators threw at the police.

The local administration has mobilized large number of security personnel to prevent any untoward incident during the shut-down. RSS
