KATHMANDU, Feb 6: Bheri Hospital in Nepalgunj, Banke, has started providing a histopathology service aimed at identifying cancer and other serious diseases at an earlier stage.
Medical Superintendent Dr Nirajan Subedi said the service was brought into operation after installing equipment supplied by the National Public Health Laboratory in Teku, Kathmandu, and arranging the required manpower. “Our long-standing effort has finally succeeded, and it will bring significant relief to patients in this region,” he said.

According to Dr Subedi, two pathology specialists are currently providing the service using four machines. Within days of its launch, three patients have already benefited, and the facility now enables timely diagnosis of cancer and other illnesses.
“With the service in place, diseases can be identified on time and treated immediately. Patients will no longer need to send samples outside the region or wait long for reports,” he added.
Head of the hospital’s Pathology Department Dr Sharmila Gupta, said the service will help detect cancer, tuberculosis, autoimmune disorders, and chronic conditions related to the kidneys, stomach, and liver. Histopathology examines tissues removed from the body — such as the appendix, gallbladder, and prostate — to determine whether they are diseased.
She expressed confidence that the facility will make it easier to detect serious illnesses like cancer, determine their type and stage, assess spread, and guide appropriate treatment.
