The 350-million-rupee factory, set up at Morang-Sunsari industrial corridor, will focus on production of high quality biscuits, according to Pawan Sarda, the factory´s promoter.
“Preparations to bring the factory into operation have reached the final stage,” Sarda told Republica. “We will begin test production within next two months and commercial production within next four months.”[break]
According to Sarda, the venture was launched to meet the growing local demand for high quality biscuits, most of which are imported from India and other countries.
“Nepal is still dependent on Indian companies like Britannia and Parle for high quality biscuits,” Sarda said. “We will produce biscuits of similar quality that can be consumed by children as well as old and sick people. We will also produce sugar-free and multi-grain biscuits that are currently high in demand.”
For this, Asian Thai Food -- the manufacturer of Rum Pum, 2PM and Preeti instant noodles -- has installed machinery of latest technology. These machines have per day biscuit production capacity of 60 tons.
“None other biscuit factory in Nepal has this kind of production capacity and no other investor has invested such a huge amount to set up a biscuit factory,” Mahesh Jaju, managing director of Asian Thai Food, said. “This makes it the biggest biscuit factory in the country.”
Jaju told Republica that the factory will not only rely on domestic market for sales but will also market it products abroad.
Nepal currently consumes Rs 4 billion worth of biscuits per year, half of which are imported.
