Ambassador Sewa Lamsal Presents Credentials as Nepal’s Permanent Representative to OPCW

KATHMANDU, Oct 31: Nepal’s Ambassador to the BENELUX (Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg ) countries and Head of Mission to the European Union Sewa Lamsal formally presented her Letters of Credence to Fernando Arias, Director-General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), at a ceremony held at the OPCW Headquarters in The Hague on Thursday.



The presentation marked the official commencement of Ambassador Lamsal’s duties as Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the OPCW, one of the world’s key international disarmament bodies.

Following the ceremony, Ambassador Lamsal held a courtesy meeting with Director-General Arias, during which she reaffirmed Nepal’s unwavering commitment to the principles and objectives of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). She reiterated Nepal’s firm stance against the production, stockpiling, and use of chemical weapons under any circumstances.


Ambassador Lamsal emphasized Nepal’s consistent support for global disarmament and its vision of a peaceful world free from weapons of mass destruction. She also highlighted Nepal’s proactive engagement as a State Party in fulfilling CWC obligations at both national and international levels.


During the meeting, Lamsal expressed Nepal’s interest in enhancing cooperation with the OPCW, particularly in areas such as capacity building, assistance and protection against chemical threats, and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. She underscored Nepal’s strong commitment to multilateralism and stressed the importance of international cooperation—especially for developing nations like Nepal—to bolster national capabilities in chemical safety and security.


Director-General Arias welcomed Ambassador Lamsal and congratulated her on her appointment, expressing appreciation for Nepal’s continued support and constructive engagement with the OPCW’s mission. He assured the organization’s readiness to work closely with Nepal to ensure the effective implementation of the Convention.


Ambassador Lamsal was accompanied by Aayusha Khanal, Second Secretary at the Embassy of Nepal in Brussels.
