Nembang made the announcement after lawmakers from Madhes-based political parties disrupted parliament proceedings objecting to the recent Supreme Court (SC) verdict that upheld the government decision to declare daura-suruwal as a national dress.[break]
“As per the Article 5 (1) of the Interim Constitution all the languages spoken as mother tongues in Nepal are the languages of the nation. Based on this ground, all the costumes used by the communities across the country -- all the way from Himal to Madhes -- are national attires,” Nembang announced at the parliament meeting. “I draw the government´s attention toward this issue as it is a serious matter.”
Following the announcement, the Madhes-based parties thanked him and allowed the parliament proceedings to resume. Also, Madhesi lawmakers from other political parties objected to the apex court´s order saying such a verdict was disrespectful to costumes used by other communities.
The Madhes-based parties have decided to burn copies of the court order on Friday.
