KATHMANDU, April 9: In a bid to strengthen the existing health communication system of the government, the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) has decided to provide free SIM cards to female community health volunteers (FCHV). Under the program, all 52,000 FCHVs across the country will get SIM cards or RUIM cards.

The MoHP said that it has already distributed 20,000 SIM cards and RUIM cards to FCHVs of 37 mountain and hilly districts. "We have signed an agreement with Nepal Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) to distribute SIM cards to remaining 32,000 FCHVs," said Secreatry at MoHP Shanta Bahadur Shrestha. He informed that the government has also provided mobile sets to FCHVs of six districts in the Karnali zone.

According to Shrestha, the NTC has provided the SIM cards under its social corporate responsibility program. "They have found a good cause to spend their money," added Shrestha. He informed that the MoHP on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with NTC to distribute SIM cards to FCHVs of the remaining 38 districts. Each SIM and RUIM card contains talk value of Rs 100.

Shrestha said SIM card is nothing compared to the selfless contribution of FCHVs. He said the country has made remarkable progress in health sector and it was impossible without selfless contribution of FCHVs. He hoped that free SIM cards will encourage FCHVs to contribute more to society.

"With the use of mobile phone, we can relay message to FCHV and get information from them immediately," said Dr Guna Raj Lohani, chief at the Curative Division at the MoHP. "FCHVs can report to health authorities and get suggestion from the experts via mobile phone," added Dr Lohani.
