2 cops suspended after detainee flees custody

POKHARA, Dec 21: Bindu Harijan, 45, an Indian national, who was arrested on the charge of theft, had run away on the pretext of taking bath on Thursday at Ward Police Office, Bagar in Pokhara.



The District Police Office of Kaski has started an investigation into the alleged negligence on the part of the two suspended constables -- Bel Prasad Sharma and Gita Subedi. Harijan had allegedly stolen a gold necklace from Mina Kumari Gurung while traveling in a micro bus on December 9.[break]



Harijan was sent to the Bagar police office as there is no women detention center elsewhere in Pokhara



The police had continued with interrogation after a complaint of theft was filed against her.



According to police, she fled the custody at around 10:30 am on the pretext of taking bath.



“We usually don´t handcuff woman and children in custody.” said Spokesperson of District Police Office, Rabindra Poudel adding, “As she was not handcuffed, the sentry couldn´t differentiate if she was a criminal.”



According to Poudel, police only learnt about her escape only after 15-20 minutes. She could not be found though the police had the police had immediately bugan searching for her.



Meanwhile, a murderer has been arrested 20 years after he was convicted by the court. Purna Kumar Shrestha, a resident of Puran Chaur in Kaski, who was convicted of killing Baburam Rokka of Tilahar VDC in Parbat was arrested from Pokhara.
