The boy was rescued from India on the third day of abduction with help from the police. Three involved in the adduction had been nabbed but Pundit managed to get off the hook.
Over the last three years, 16 children under 17 have been kidnapped in Dhanusa. Three of them were brutally murdered. According to the police, most of the kidnappings are carried out for ransom.
“Most of the abductions are carried out for ransom,” said Bigan Yadav, assistant sub- inspector of the District Police Crime Branch.
Kidnappings in Tarai are on the rise as armed outfits have resorted to kidnapping to collect funds.
A three-year-old girl was kidnapped from her house near Bindabasini Temple in Janakpur on October 9. The kidnappers had demanded Rs 5 million in ransom. The kidnappers are now in police custody.
Similarly, 12-year-old Satish Shah and 13-year-old Mubarak Rai were kidnapped from Basiha, Dhanusa in October last year.
The kidnappers had demanded five million in ransom. While Shah was freed on the fifth day of abduction, Rai was murdered. The kidnappers later revealed that Rai was killed as he had recognized the kidnappers.
Three involved in the murder of Rai are now in Jaleshwar jail.
