Thapa meets Swaraj, Singh

KATHMANDU, Oct 19: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Kamal Thapa, who is on a three-day visit to India to sort out the obstruction of petroleum products and other essential goods coming to Nepal via India-Nepal border points, met with Indian Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj in New Delhi, Sunday.

Informing about the discussions held on the occasion, spokesperson at Indian Ministry for External Affairs Vikas Swarup tweeted that the meeting between Thapa and Swaraj focused on "working for peace, stability and reconciliation in Nepal."


Prior to the meeting with Swaraj, Indian Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar reached Thapa at his hotel and held a separate meeting.

Similarly, Deputy Prime Minister Thapa also met with Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh and discussed ending the difficulties seen at the border points, informed Mohan Shrestha, a close aide to Thapa.

Following the meeting, Singh tweeted, "Met Nepal's Deputy Prime Minister Shri Kamal Thapa today. We discussed a range of issues pertaining to India-Nepal relations."

In another tweet, Singh said, "India and Nepal have always been committed to work closely together to advance stability, peace and prosperity in the South Asian region."

Thapa's visit to India is his first foreign trip after assuming office as foreign minister. He leads a nine-member delegation. He is accompanied by Ngaindra Prasad Upadhyaya, secretary at the Ministry of Commerce and Supply, Shankar Das Bairagi, secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deep Kumar Upadhyaya, Nepal's ambassador to India, and Laxman Aryal, joint-secretary at the Ministry of Finance, among others.

However, no notable decision has been taken. Thapa will return home on Monday and is scheduled to hold a press meet in the capital.
