KC becomes third int´l arbiter
KATHMANDU: FIDE arbiter Umesh KC has been chosen international arbiter by the executive committee meeting of World Federation of Chess. The meeting was held from February 3-6 in Dubai. KC has become the third international arbiter from Nepal after Gyanendra Khaiju and Bidur Gautam. KC was chosen FIDE arbiter in 2009. KC of Dolkha was the deputy chief of arbiter during Asian Amateur Chess Championship held in Kula Lumpur some four months ago.
Maharjan feted
DHARAN: Sunsari District Boxing Association on Friday felicitated pugilist Deepak Maharjan for winning the only medal for Nepal in 16th Asian Games held in Guangzhou, China. Maharjan had won bronze for Nepal. Maharjan was awarded with a purse of Rs 2,555 and letter of appreciation.
Host Sunakothi starts with winning note
KATHMANDU: The host Sunakothi.com started with a winning note in the Sunakothi Cup Open Lalitpur District-wide Football Tournament that kicked off Saturday in the capital. Sunakothi defeated Balkumari Youth Club 1-0 in group A match. Purna Maharjan scored the lone goal in the 11th minute. Earlier Lalitpur CDO Chudamani Sharma inaugurated the tournament.
The inaugural ceremony was also attended by artist Madan Krishna Shrestha. Altogether 23 team are contesting in the knockout football tournament organized in Sunakothi nearly after two decades. The winner and the runner up of tournament will bag a purse of Rs 100,000 and Rs 50,000 respectively.
Mount Kailash lifts title
KATHMANDU: Mount Kailash School Club lifted the trophy of Third Sherpa Loshar Cup Football Tournament on Saturday. Mount Kailash defeated Bhojpur Sherpa Tsiduk 5-4 in penalty shootout. The match was taken to penalty shootout after the regular time ended in a 2-2 draw. With the win, Mount Kailash bagged Rs 20,000 while Bhojpur satisfied for Rs 10,000. Sindhu Football Club finished third.
Double delight for Neric
KATHMANDU: Senior and junior boys´ teams of Neric School advanced into the quarterfinals of the second Innovative Inter School Basketball Tournament on Saturday. The senior team of Neric beat Kathmandu English School 43-33 while the junior team overcame Deneb 18-5. In other matches of the senior category, CAB defeated Nepal Central 32-23 and Little Angel´s School thrashed VS Niketan 51-27 for the quarterfinal spot. In the junior boys´ section, Gyan Niketan thumped Baylor Academy 11-5 and Green Land routed Golden Peak 21-7 for the quarterfinal spot. In the girls´ category, Valley Public and Gyanodaya registered wins.
Twin wins for NIMS
KATHMANDU: NIMS registered twin wins in the First NOBS Inter School 3X3 Basketball Tournament on Saturday. NIMS beat Midland 16-10 in the first match while it registered a 17-14 win over NOBS B in the second match.

KATHMANDU: Host Shankar Dev Campus Blue on Saturday advanced into the final of the GP Koirala Memorial Cup Nationwide Inter Campus Men´s Volleyball Tournament. Shankar Dev beat Public Youth Campus 22-25, 21-25, 25-12, 25-16, 15-13. Nepal Commerce Campus and Baneshwar Campus entered into the semifinals winning their respective matches.
Wilson off to winning start
KATHMANDU: Host Wilson Academy started the Wilson Hoops basketball tournament on a winning note on Saturday. Wilson edged past Siddhartha Banasthali 44-40 in the senior boys´ category with 16 points from Pema Denial. In another match, Nikesh Rai´s 15 points guided LRI to a 42-28 victory over Young Heart. In the girls´ category, British School beat NOBS 18-12 and Maha Manjushree thrashed Young Heart 35-17.
Nepal wins team championship title
KATHMANDU: Nepal lifted the team championship trophy of the First International Junior and Senior Kung-Fu Tournament on Saturday. Nepal won 33 gold, 23 silver and 26 bronze medals to win the team championship title. India finished in the second position with five golds, one silver and 12 bronzes. Amar Tamang of Nepal and Nicole from Belgium were adjudged the best players of the tournament in the men´s and women´s category respectively. Altogether 155 players from seven nations had participated in the three-day tournament.
