KATHMANDU, Feb 28: Sneha's Care, an animal welfare organization, rescued a bull that escaped from a slaughterhouse on Friday morning.
After being struck with a hammer for slaughter, the distressed bull ran from the slaughterhouse in Kathmandu. Witnesses saw it running from Basantapur to Tripureshwar and then towards Teku. A team from the Metropolitan Police Circle, Kalimati, and the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Police captured the bull.
Dr Ashutosh Bhatt from the Division Forest Office and Police Inspector Prakash Pandit from the Metropolitan City Police immediately requested Sneha's care for the rescue. The rescue team from Sneha's Care promptly reached the scene and rescued the bull. The organization is now treating the animal at its animal care center in Bhaisepati.
Sneha's Care President Sneha Shrestha reported that the hammer strike caused a deep injury above the bull's right eye and on its forehead. The team is currently providing medical treatment and keeping the bull under close observation.
"As soon as we received the information, our rescue team rushed to the scene and rescued the bull. With everyone's support, we saved a life," Shrestha said.
She stressed that the lack of animal welfare laws in Nepal allows animals to suffer cruelty and inhumane treatment. "This is why implementing an animal welfare act as soon as possible is crucial," she added.
Eyewitnesses saw the bull running towards Tripureshwar from the Basantapur area around 6:30 AM.
During this time, it reportedly damaged some vehicles and motorcycles near Tripureshwar and Teku. However, Metropolitan City Police Inspector Pandit said they have not yet collected the details of the damage.
Sneha's Care had rescued animals that escaped from slaughterhouses in the past as well.
Two years ago, rescuers from Sneha's Care saved and sheltered a buffalo named Mayakumari from Buddhanagar, Kathmandu. Unfortunately, Mayakumari passed away a few months ago. Sneha Shrestha's Facebook post mourning Mayakumari deeply touched the hearts of many animal lovers and made Mayakumari's story widely known. When Mayakumari escaped from the slaughterhouse, she was three months pregnant and later gave birth to a calf. The calf, named Maicha, now lives happily and safely at Sneha's Care.
