KATHMANDU, July 12: At a time when Sher Bahadur Deuba faction in the Nepali Congress (NC) is making a desperate attempt to change parliamentary party (PP) leader, party general secretary Prakash Man Singh on Tuesday hinted that PP leader could be changed only through due process as per the party statute.

Addressing a function organized by Nepal Thakur Union to mark the 88th birth anniversary of the party´s late founding leader Girija Prasad Koirala in the capital, Singh said the PP leader could be changed if the rival faction proved its majority in the PP. [break]

“Since Nepali Congress is a democratic party anything is possible if it is done as per the process stipulated by the statute,” he said.

Singh was a close ally of Deuba for long as he joined Nepali Congress (Democratic), a splinter faction of the NC, formed by Deuba in September, 2002. Singh changed his camp as then Acting President Sushil Koirala made him his ´panel mate´ (running for the post of general secretary) during the 12th general convention held in September, 2010.

Arguing that the PP leader would be the unanimous prime ministerial candidate from the party if NC got the opportunity to head new government, Singh indirectly suggested to the rival faction to change the PP leader through fresh election if the faction wants to see Deuba as prime minister.

Speaking on the occasion, Singh also asked Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal to tender resignation from the post immediately to pave way for the formation of national consensus government as agreed in the five-point deal, reached before the extension of the term of Constituent Assembly on May 28.
