KYIV, Jan 24: Russian strikes killed one person and injured 23 others in Ukraine's capital and the northeastern city of Kharkiv overnight, authorities said early Saturday.
The country was under an air raid alert with military authorities in Kyiv warning of drones and ballistic missiles.
"Kyiv is under a massive enemy attack. Do not leave shelters!" Mayor Vitali Klitschko posted on Telegram, adding that several non-residential buildings had been hit.
"Currently, one person is known to have died and four to have been wounded," he wrote in a separate post, adding that three of the injured had been hospitalised.
Fires broke out in several buildings hit by drone debris while heat and water services in parts of the capital were interrupted, he said.
Another four people were injured in the wider Kyiv region, the head of the regional military authority said.
Farther east in Ukraine's second city Kharkiv, Mayor Igor Terekhov reported an attack by Iranian-made Shahed drones had damaged several residential buildings near the Russian border.
Police posted on Telegram that the drone strikes had injured 15 people in the Kharkiv region and also damaged two medical facilities.
The strikes come after negotiators from Russia, Ukraine and the United States met Friday in Abu Dhabi for the first direct talks on a plan being pushed by US President Donald Trump to end the almost four-year-long war.
Ahead of those talks, which are set to continue on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said territory remained the key sticking point, with Moscow insisting Kyiv pull out of the eastern Donbas region.
