SURKHET, Aug 12: Population of Rautes – a disappearing ethnic community of Nepal - has declined in the recent years.

The number of Raute people is decreasing day by day with the rise in death incidents because of poor health condition caused by nutrition deficit. The population of endangered ethnic community has decreased to 128 this year from 2,878 in 1992 AD. [break]

Some death incidents are found occurring due to poor health conditions while some others reportedly died in course of hunting in the forest.

Lack of awareness among Raute is the main reason behind the decline, said Prof. Sher Bahadur Rayamajhi of Birendranagar multiple campus, Surkhet, who has been involved in research works on the life and livelihood of Raute for the past four years.

Likewise, women belonging to this ethnic group are often deprived of having nourishing foods during post-partum and so is the case with newborn, which obviously trigger maternal child mortality, added Prof. Rayamajhi.

Population of Raute was 2979 according to the Census-2048 BS (1992 AD) while it stood at 658 in 2058 BS and 180 in 2066 BS.

The Raute community has been demanding that the government should increase the amount of incentive being provided to them.
