Qatar hold Switzerland to dramatic 1-1 draw

KATHMANDU, June 14: Qatar and Switzerland played out an entertaining 1-1 draw, with Qatar scoring a late equalizer to rescue a point.

In a group B match, Switzerland took the lead in the 16th minute after Qatar goalkeeper Mohammed Abunada fouled Denis Zakaria while attempting to stop his run into the box. The referee awarded a penalty, which Breel Embolo converted after Abunada failed to keep out the shot.


Despite conceding, Abunada redeemed himself with a series of important saves, denying several Swiss attempts to extend their lead.


Switzerland also earned 10 corner kicks during the match but could not capitalize on their dominance.


Qatar struck back in the closing moments when Boualem Khoukhi found the net to level the score and secure a 1-1 draw.
