According to Chand, police personnel tried to manhandle him when he was waiting for the Nepali U-16 team at the main entrance of the stadium to console the team after its loss to India in the SAFF U-16 Championship Football Tournament.[break]
“Under-16 team´s goalkeeper Birendra Chand was coming to meet me and I was waiting for him and his teammates,” said Chand. “Meantime, a police sub-inspector ordered me to go away. I introduced myself and requested him to let me stay. However, a police inspector started to abuse me and another policeman pulled my T-shirt. Coach Roberts saw it and saved me from getting beaten up,” he added.
Chand condemned the policemen´s misconduct and said nobody should be humiliated in such fashion. “Police officers, who have taken charge of security at the stadium, should know how to behave with spectators,” said Chand.
National team captain Sagar Thapa and his teammates -- Thapa, Sandeep Rai, Bikash Singh Chhetri and Biraj Maharjan -- expressed frustration at the policemen´s misconduct.
“If we had not reached on time, the policemen could have beaten up Rohit. It is an unfortunate incident that a national player is mistreated at the entrance of the national stadium,” said Thapa.
