A day after the promulgation of the new constitution, the Republica team reached out to the general public from various backgrounds and communities to appraise their reception of the constitution. Excerpts :

The new constitution has failed to include the aspirations of the Madhesi community. Major three parties have tried to force everyone to accept it. Instead of fulfilling the nation's demand, the constitution rather caters to their personal needs. Times are such that our fathers and sons have been killed yet we have found no recognition in the constitution. The protest in Madhesh will continue. Our demands are valid and we will fight for it"

"The constitution does not acknowledge demands of the Madhesi community. There is no use of constitution in Madhesh and we won't accept it as ours. Leaders have outright insulted our language, culture and identity. This constitution has been brought by people who flinch upon hearing the name of Tarai and Madhesh. Why would we oblige to it?"

"We are happy that the much awaited constitution has been finally declared. But the situation at Madhesh has saddened us too. We wish that all the instability and disputes were settled with the constitution declaration. The leaders who showed unity in completing this process should also come together to resolve this conflict with similar attitude. They should hold talks with the disgruntled parties and groups and try to sort things through non-violent means. The promulgation has shown that our leaders can come and work together for national interest despite political differences. Now, we hope that they will be able to bring the Madhesi people into the process and end this unrest."

"It's good that we have finally got a constitution to call our own. Now everyone should focus in restoring peace and harmony throughout Nepal. It is sad to know that many issues related to Madhesi, Tharu and minority groups have not been addressed. But then again one cannot satisfy the demands put forward by all. We hope that necessary amendments will be made in the future and the constitution will become more inclusive."

"Declaration of the constitution of federal democratic republic of Nepal is a historic event. The leaders have been able to come together to save the nation from further political turmoil. I am hoping that with the constitution, the nation will finally be able to gain political stability. But it would have been much better if the Madhesi community too had been included in it. With the constitution, Nepal can now focus on development and creating investment-friendly environment now. And special thanks to our leaders for making the eight-year-long dream come true."
Chakra Singh Hyaki
Chief of Nampa Conservation Area, Darchula

"For the first time in the history of Nepal, women have got a constitution where they can give citizenship to their children by their own name. We should take this as a stepping stone for our movement. This has definitely been one of the best features of this constitution for me and I believe this is the most progressive constitution so far. We look forward to see that issues missed out this time are included with future amendments."
Sita Bhusal
Women Rights Activist, Gulmi

"The constitution has institutionalized issues of federalism, democracy and religious neutrality. This has opened new prospects for the nation as a whole. Disparities that have arisen due to inequality and geographical difficulties can now be solved with practical approach. But even in bringing the constitution, our leaders have still not been able to address the plight of Madhesi and other minority groups. This constitution that saw our political leaders unite has been ignorant of the majority of Madhesi population. In doing this the leaders have encouraged anti nationalists to conspire against the interest of the nation. I hope that the government will be able to resolve this dispute with Madhesh and bring the nation together once again."
Kiran Karn
Student, Janakpur

"Nepalese have finally got a constitution after casting votes for two times. This constitution has fulfilled a long time dream of ours to have a constitution that has been written by our own elected representatives. With its declaration the chapter of insurgency and political instability has finally ended. I hope that now peace will prevail in the nation and we will make tremendous development. Also I hope that this constitution will provide justice to the groups that have faced injustice all these years."
Kali Bahadur Sahakari
Nepali Congress Chairperson, Kalikot

"It is a matter of pride and happiness to finally get the constitution. Despite all the difficulties we faced to get here, the leaders once again came together for the sake of securing national interest. But their failure to resolve differences with the Madhesi community has been disappointing. It would have been even better if they had been able to include this community in the constitution. The leaders should push for talks so that our aspirations are also included in the constitution. If this happens then surely all of Madhesh will readily embrace Nepal's constitution as their own"
