National Games from Nov 27

KATHMANDU, July 17: The National Sports Council (NSC) has decided to host the Seventh National Games from November 27 to December 4 in the eastern development region. The 102nd board meeting of the NSC held at the Ministry of Youth and Sports on Friday took the decision.

The board meeting of the NSC was held nearly after a year.Making public the decisions of the meeting, NSC Member Secretary Keshav Kumar Bista said around 35 to 40 games will be held during the event and most of them will be held in Jhapa, Morang and Sunsari districts. "The opening and closing of the games will be held either in Biratnagar or Dharan," said Bista. According to Bista, Rs 230 million has been allocated for the Games.

The meeting held under the chairmanship of Minister for Youth and Sports Purusottam Paudel, who is also the president of NSC board, formally decided to participate in the 12th South Asian Games (SAG) and start preparations for SAG as well as National Games. The SAG is due to held in India in February. Similarly, NSC has also decided to coordinate with internationally recognized Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) for participation in SAG.

The meeting also decided to nominate officials for the vacant posts at District Sports Development Committees (DSDC) and Regional Sports Development Committees (RSDC). "The four-year tenure of 72 out of 75 DSDC and four out of five RSDC has expired. Thus, the meeting has decided to start nomination of officials in the district and regional bodies," Bista said.

Similarly, the meeting has also decided to issue NSC's progress report (white paper) for the last four years. "We have decided to issue the white paper to maintain transparency at NSC and also make new plans and policies based on achievements and failures," he said.

Besides, the meeting has also decided to start the process for permanent appointment to contract and wage-based employees and initiate promotion of employees halted for the last 10 years.

The board has also decided to seek financial support for the treatment of taekwondo player Saksham Karki who was injured during training in the Asian Games in Incheon. "We have decided to seek financial support of Rs 345,700 from the Ministry of Finance because the same amount was spent for his treatment," Bista said.
