KATHMANDU, Oct 22: The Maha Asthami, the eight day of Dashain was observed across the country, worshipping Goddess Durga, on Monday.

On this day, the blood thirsty Kali, the most demonic form of Goddess Durga, is appeased through the sacrifices of goats, buffaloes and ducks at the deity’s temples. [break]

The night following the day is called Kal Ratir (Black night). On the mid-night, animal sacrifices are made it Dashain Ghar in Hanumandhoka Palace.

It is believed that all these rites bring peace, prosperity and happiness in the life of devotees. Also in recent years, there has been increasing protest from animal rights activists against the tradition of animal sacrifice during Dashain festivity.
