The water level however had gradually subsided by 4 pm. [break]
At 4 pm the water level decreased to 156,400 cusec and to 153,745 cusec one hour later.
All these levels call for red lights in various directions to indicate possible danger. The indication is given in the eastern region after the water level crosses 150,000 cusec. After the level rises above 200,000 cusec the red light is made visible in the western direction while it is lit in the center when the level further reaches 300,000 cusec.
Currently, red light has been lit in the eastern direction.
"Even though the water level decreased by the evening, it could again rise unexpectedly if it rained in the hill districts, and if the water rises consistently, it will surely increase the danger," said Bharat Chaudhari, a staff at the Koshi barrage control room. "Twenty-two out of 56 doors of the barrage have been opened for now," he added.
The barrage can withstand the force of up to 950,000 cusec. However, it may not work optimally due to the collection of huge amount of silt in the upper part of the barrage.
