Commenting on the political report presented by the party chairman for deliberations at the meeting, politburo members said the document was full of details but failed to analyze trends and pinpoint mistakes.[break]
According to the party´s spokesperson Pradeep Gyawali, party leaders at the meeting criticized the party chairman´s documents for failing to properly review the performance of past governments. “They emphasized that the party leadership come up with clear vision on some of the major political issues such as state restructuring and system of governance,” Gyawali told Republica. Party leaders have remained deeply divided over the major thorny issues in constitution writing.
According to him, those who aired their views at the meeting urged the party leadership to remain prepared in view of post-May 28 situation when the renewed deadline for the Constituent Assembly would expire.
According to Gyawali, the participants also pressed the party leadership, which has recently announced a campaign for strengthening intra-party unity, to come up with concrete programs to the long running feud within the party.
Party leaders, including Mukunda Neupane, Kashinath Adhikari, Prakash Jwala, Nagendra Chaudhary, Beduram Bhusal, Rajendra Pandey, Ramchandra Jha, Pradip Gyawali, Bijay Subba, Arun Nepal, Khagaraj Adhikari, Puspa Kandel, Surendra Pandey and Bishnu Rimal, aired their views at the meeting.
According to a participant, some of the leaders criticized the party chairman for hesitating to answer crucial questions on why the Nepal-led and Khanal-led governments were unseated.
“Some leaders said the party leadership shouldn´t hesitate to say in clear terms that the Nepal-led and Khanal -led governments were toppled due to the tendency of party leaders to conspire against each other,” said a participant. “We can consolidate the party only if we dare to pinpoint mistakes and commit not to repeat them.”
The participants were of the view that merely presenting the details wouldn´t offer a solution for the future. They suggested to the party leadership to be clear about the future course of the politics and also to clearly identify parties to forge working alliance with.
In the past, the party chairman led a Maoist-backed government whereas another faction led by other two senior leaders Madhav Kumar Nepal and KP Sharma Oli forged an alliance with the Nepali Congress.
According to a participant, Rimal argued that both the governments failed to make the party rank and file feel that the previous coalitions were led by UML. “It seemed the each of the governments were led by only one faction of the party,” a leader quoted Rimal as saying at the meeting.
The party leaders also suggested that the UML needs to list out failures of the Bhattarai-led government.
“We can prepare a lengthy saga of Bhattarai´s failures,” said a leader.
Leaders said they didn´t discuss if the UML should stake claim to government leadership if the present government is toppled.
