Insensate acts

A 35-year-old unidentified man died on Monday after sustaining critical injuries in a bomb blast in Butwal on Sunday. This was the second in a series of five explosions that have wreaked terror across the country. A total of 46 Nepalis have been injured in the blasts that have taken place over a span of five days. It is most likely that the victims may have been oblivious of the demands of those that engineered the blasts.



Security agencies are showing lukewarm response to these horrific incidents. Speaking to this daily, Deputy Superintendent of Police Ganga Pandey stated that a “few blasts” is not be reason enough to trigger panic. His response has greatly surprised us. The last of these bomb blasts occurred in Banepa, one of the thriving business hubs close to the capital. We have every reason to panic because bomb blasts are a deadly threat to lives and property. It is absolutely inhumane to target common, innocent people for the sake of “revolution” and such acts should be condemned by all.



Peace has remained elusive in Nepal since the start of the armed conflict in 1996. It has still been struggling to recuperate from the wounds the decade-long insurgency inflicted. At a time when the government is struggling get a full shape and, at the same time, get on with the task of constitution writing and peace process, instances like this are likely to invite untold disaster for Nepal’s peace process.



Violence can never be an answer to anything. Jatiya Samyukta Mukti Morcha Secretary Muktidata, Bhagat Singh of Janatantrik Tarai Mukti Morcha, Abhay Singh of Tarai-Madhes Mukti Morcha and their likes, who have claimed responsibility for these barbaric acts, should be aware of this fact. By perpetrating these condemnable acts, they are further estranging the people for whom they claim to be fighting. They should be aware that such incidents will only invite bloodshed.



While the nation is reeling under a sudden wave of explosions and terror, the government cannot act as a mute spectator. The government must take urgent measures to deal with such criminal activities and to bring to book the perpetrators of such inhumane acts. Nepalis will not accept violence in any form on any pretext anymore. Activists of “liberation front” must take into account this reality before they insensitively place bombs in public places and transports.
