KATHMANDU, March 1: The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Basanta Bahadur Kunwar emphasized that a single agency cannot control and prevent drug abuse. He made this remark on Saturday while launching the nationwide anti-drug campaign led by the Nepal Police. He urged all stakeholders to take collective responsibility and work together to address the issue effectively.
IGP Kunwar urged individuals, society, professionals, political figures, social workers, local bodies, communities, and stakeholders to work together to control drug abuse. He stated that authorities launched the campaign in the Kathmandu Valley to create a drug-free society by promoting equal and active participation from various sectors to combat drug abuse.
“No single agency can control and prevent drug abuse. Everyone must take collective responsibility. Proactive efforts play a crucial role in this process. Individuals, society, professionals, political figures, social workers, parents, local bodies, communities, and stakeholders must work together.” he said.
He stated that around 300 million people worldwide and nearly 60 million in Asia use drugs. Kunwar reported that cannabis and cannabis-derived substances account for nearly 80 percent of drug use. He also said that drug-related cases across the country have increased by about 7 percent each fiscal year.
