Head of Rara Construction arrested

KATHMANDU, Dec 19: Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police on Wednesday nabbed Kumar Nath Upreti, 54, the head of Rara Construction Pvt Ltd from Bagbazar, Kathmandu, for cheating government revenue using fake Value Added Tax (VAT) bills.



According to Sub Inspector Ishwar Babu Karki, a team of CIB Police nabbed Upreti acting on a tip off. Karki said Upreti was absconding after Kathmandu District Court on December 29, 2003 slapped him a fine of Rs 1,36,06,800 and one year imprisonment for cheating VAT equivalent to Rs 68,03,400. According to the police, Upreti is a resident of New Baneswhar-10, Kathmandu, and was involved in different projects such as Sinkalama Road Constructions, Pokhara Airport Reformation Project, Dumre Bensi Road Construction and various road maintenance projects between 1990 and 1996.



He had presented fake renewed certificate of VAT bills without submitting the income. The court has granted custody of Upreti to the police for further investigation.
