Traders say fruits have become cheaper compared to Dashain due to improved supplies. According to Nepal Fruits Wholesalers Association (NFWA), the fruits market at Kuleshwar is presently receiving around 90 tons of fruits a day. During Dashain, the market had received only about 30 tons a day.[break]
Prices of popular fruits like apple, orange, Chinese apple, Chinese pear, local pear, pomegranate, papaya, and water melon, among others, have come down in range of Rs 10-Rs25 per kg. Banana and sweet orange, however, become expensive due to rise in their prices in India itself.
On Monday, local orange was selling at Rs 35 per kg, down from Rs 50 per kg recorded during Dashain while the price of Mustang apple has come down from Rs 80 per kg compared to Rs 120 per kg. Price of Indian orange has also dropped by Rs 15 per kg compared to Dashain when the fruit was sold at Rs 75 per kg.
Likewise, papaya and pomegranate have become cheaper by Rs 15 and Rs 10 per kg, respectively, and are selling at Rs 45 per kg and Rs 220 per kg. Watermelon too is selling at a lower price of Rs 40 per kg.
“Prices of fruits have come down in the wholesale market compared to Dashain due to improved supplies,” said Arjun Prasad Humagain, a fruit wholesaler at Kuleshwar market.
Price of banana, however, increased by Rs 20 per dozen, making it Rs 55 per dozen, while sweet orange is being sold at Rs 90 per kg compared to Rs 75 per kg recorded during Dashain.
