ILAM, May 29: The number of students in many community schools in the southern part of Ilam is reportedly on the decline every year due to terror by wild elephants in the area.

The area surrounded by dense forest on all sides usually sees a number of incidents involving the destruction caused by the wild tuskers, thereby instilling a sense of fear and terror among the students. The Bahuban Secondary School in Irautar-8 has been witnessing a steady decline in the number of students due to the same reason, according to Head teacher of the School Dinraj Niroula.
The school that had 325 students last year now had only 250 coming back for enrollment this academic year, adds Niroula.

Ilam's Irautar and Jhapa's Bahundangi and Shantinagar VDCs among others report incidents of herds of elephants coming for food and cereals, destructing homes and settlements, and thereby terrorizing the locals including the school children. RSS
