In the past four days, the police have detained three Nepali nationals and an Indian with illegal drugs such as Corex, Phenergan, Phensedyl and Diazepam, among others, at Thadi border.[break]
Ram Bihari Yadav, 32, of Sakhuwanankarkatti VDC-9, Mahesh Mahato, 18, of Udayapur, Aakhtar Miya, 50, of Saptari and Dilip Paswan, 18, of Madhubani, India have been arrested by the police on the charge of smuggling the illegal drugs.
Following the interrogation with the Indian national, the police have learnt about the nexus between Nepali and Indian smugglers.
According to the police, “The confiscated drugs are available in Nepal only to those with doctor´s prescription. But it is openly available at drug stores on the Indian side of the border making it easier to smuggle them into Nepal.”
Raj Kumar Sah, inspector at District Police Office Siraha, said they have identified a group that is active in smuggling illicit drugs from Laukaha and Jaynagar of India in the pretext of bringing in daily household stuffs and medical treatment. With many youths plunging into drug addiction, the demand of illegal drugs has increased in Nepal lately, he said.
The police have nabbed nearly 18 smugglers in the last three months from the border area of Siraha.
